The goal of alcohol moderation is to regain control of alcohol use by identifying triggers for overdrinking and establishing a new relationship with alcohol. This is achieved through behavior modifications and learning how to utilize coping skills instead of drinking. This method is also effective for marijuana.

TSM (The Sinclair Method) can be utilized to achieve moderation or abstinence. The Sinclair Method entails using Naltrexone one hour before planned alcohol use to reduce the dopamine reinforcement that occurs in the brain for some people when they drink. This allows another way to achieve sobriety or to moderate alcohol use effectively.

The goal of abstinence is to stay sober from all mood and mind-altering substances. By processing through cravings, triggers, and learning relapse prevention skills and strategies to refrain from drinking, clients make behavioral and cognitive changes to reach their goals.
